Making the Most of Your Time with the Doctor

Managing lupus can be a challenge. But your doctor and healthcare team are there to help you. Here are our top three tips on how to make the most of your time with your doctor.

Tip 1: Keep Your Healthcare Team Up to Date

  • You may have more than one doctor you see (e.g. family doctor; rheumatologist; other doctors who help treat you).
  • Make sure each of your doctors has the names and contact information of all the doctors who treat you.

Tip 2: ASK. Because…questions are good!

  • Remember: when it comes to your health, there are no stupid questions.
  • Keep a running list of questions. Write them down and bring them to your next doctor’s appointment.
  • Download our Patient Diary.

Tip 3: Bring a Buddy

  • Sometimes it’s hard to remember all the things your doctor told you.
  • Bring a trusted friend or a family member with you to your appointments, so he or she can help you take in all the information.

Why See a Rheumatologist for Lupus?

  • Lupus is a complex disease; no two patients are alike in the way their symptoms might appear and for how long.
  • Rheumatologists are experts in diagnosing and treating diseases of the autoimmune system such as lupus. Rheumatologists can help patients determine what treatments are appropriate for them.
