The BENLYSTA Cares Support Team can help you navigate your insurance coverage and help determine if you're eligible for the Co-pay Program. As part of BENLYSTA Cares, BENLYSTA Gateway is a centralized program that offers services to help guide you through the access and reimbursement process.

How to enroll in BENLYSTA Gateway

  1. Download the enrollment form
    BENLYSTA Gateway Enrollment Form
  2. Complete and submit the form
    You’ll need to work with your doctor to fill out the form and submit it to BENLYSTA Gateway.
  3. BENLYSTA Gateway will contact you
    After contacting your insurance and determining coverage options, BENLYSTA Gateway will contact you within 1 week.
  4. Get approval
    Your doctor will handle your prescription once approved. Call your doctor’s office to check the status of your prescription if you don’t hear back within 2 weeks of the first call.

Living with lupus has its challenges. Lupus keeps us busy with swelling and joint pain, and these symptoms of lupus can easily deter us from being able to navigate insurance coverage and co-pays. But I’m a firm believer that lupus patients are overcomers! I’ve been through this, and it’s scary, but you don’t have to do it alone. Today, I am here to break down the resources available to you through the BENLYSTA Savings and Support page.

Whether you have been living with lupus for a while, or are a caretaker for somebody with lupus, take advantage of everything BENLYSTA Cares offers! My biggest piece of advice to lupus patients or caretakers is ask. Ask questions to your provider, pharmacist, or pharmaceutical company. You may be surprised to see what co-pay assistance programs are available. Don’t make assumptions about these programs. There are real people working behind the scenes with our best interests at heart. Their help in navigating insurance coverage may help make a difference to you. We deal with enough stress dealing with our disease as it is. Take some of the weight off by reaching out for help.

Do not use BENLYSTA if you are allergic to belimumab or any ingredients in BENLYSTA.

The most important information about BENLYSTA
Immunosuppressive agents, including BENLYSTA, can cause serious side effects. Some of these may cause death.

  • Infections: fever, chills, pain or burning with urination, urinating often, coughing up mucus, or warm, red, or painful skin or sores on your body. Infections could be serious, leading to hospitalization or death. 
  • Allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions: itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, anxiousness, low blood pressure, dizziness or fainting, headache, nausea, or skin rash. Serious allergic reactions can happen the day of, or in days after, receiving BENLYSTA and may cause death.
  • Mental health problems and suicide: thoughts of suicide or dying, attempt to commit suicide, trouble sleeping (insomnia), new or worse anxiety or depression, acting on dangerous impulses, other unusual changes in your behavior or mood, or thoughts of hurting yourself or others.

Before receiving BENLYSTA, discuss with your healthcare provider if you:

  • think you have an infection or have infections that keep coming back. Do not use BENLYSTA if you have an infection unless your healthcare provider tells you to.
  • have or have had mental health problems such as depression or thoughts of suicide.
  • have recently received or may need a vaccination. If you are receiving BENLYSTA, you should not receive live vaccines.
  • are taking any medicines, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • are allergic to other medicines.
  • are receiving other biologic medicines.
  • have or have had any type of cancer.
  • have any other medical conditions.
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if BENLYSTA will harm your unborn baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether to prevent pregnancy while on BENLYSTA. If you choose to prevent pregnancy, you should use an effective method of birth control for at least 4 months after the final dose of BENLYSTA.
  • become pregnant or if you think you may be pregnant while on BENLYSTA. Talk to your healthcare provider about enrolling in the BENLYSTA Pregnancy Registry to monitor the health of you and your baby. You can enroll in this registry by calling 1-877-681-6296.
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is unknown if BENLYSTA passes into your breast milk.

Possible side effects of BENLYSTA

  • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). PML is a serious and life-threatening brain infection. PML can result in death or severe disability. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you notice any new or worsening medical problems: memory loss, trouble thinking, dizziness or loss of balance, difficulty talking or walking, or loss of vision.
  • Cancer. Medicines that affect the immune system, including BENLYSTA, may increase your risk of certain cancers.

The most common side effects of BENLYSTA are nausea, diarrhea, fever, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, persistent cough, trouble sleeping, leg or arm pain, depression, headache, and pain, redness, itching, or swelling at the site of injection (when given subcutaneously). These are not all the possible side effects of BENLYSTA. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

  • Who is eligible for the Co-pay Program?

    Eligibility criteria
    Patients may be eligible based on general eligibility criteria below: 

    • Patient has a commercial medical or prescription insurance plan; or 
    • Patient is uninsured;

    AND

    • Patient is a resident of the US (including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands); and
    • Not eligible for or enrolled in a government-funded program that provides prescription drug coverage*

    *Patients are not eligible for this program if they are covered by any federal or state prescription insurance program. This includes patients enrolled in Medicare Part B, Medicare Part D, Medicaid, Medigap, Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Defense (DoD) programs or TriCare. This may also include state pharmaceutical assistance programs and other federal or state plans not listed. Patients are also ineligible for this program if they are Medicare eligible and enrolled in an employer-sponsored group waiver health plan or government-subsidized prescription drug benefit program for retirees. Patients enrolled in a state or federally funded prescription insurance program may not use this program even if they elect to be processed as an uninsured (cash paying) patient. Those on Medicare Part D, even if in the coverage gap, are not eligible.

  • What should I do if I don’t hear back from BENLYSTA Gateway after submitting my form?

    If you don’t hear from BENLYSTA Gateway, your doctor’s office, or specialty pharmacy in the 2 weeks after you send in your form, call your doctor’s office to inquire about it or contact the BENLYSTA Cares Support Team at 1-877-4-BENLYSTA (1-877-423-6597) to check on the progress. Once Gateway has the information they need, they can prepare a summary of benefits typically within 1 week.
